John Henry
In reading A Whole New Mind, the author retells the story of John Henry. When teaching my students about Tall Tales, I often read this story to my class. I also show my class a very well done united streaming clip of this classic tale. This story so perfectly illustrates an age of change. Every class I have read this to has had same reaction to the ending. "Why does John Henry die"? Is it because his heart gives up...or does he lose heart? I want to change the ending... He does not die but "rethinks and reframes" and becomes CEO of the Railroad :)

Anna, I got such a kick out of hearing that story! As a former 1st grade teacher, I remember talking about John Henry and even remember a song we used to sing about him. You brought back some great memories for me!

ReplyDeleteI remember listening to that story when my teacher read it to us. There is also a good Disney rendition. I cried when I heard the story...I just didn't want John Henry to die. I don't think he gave up, and I like your ending better Anna.
