John Henry

In reading A Whole New Mind,  the author retells the story of John Henry.  When teaching my students about Tall Tales, I often read this story to my class. I also show my class a very well done united streaming clip of this classic tale. This story so perfectly illustrates an age of change. Every class I have read this to has had same reaction to the ending. "Why does John Henry die"?   Is it because his heart gives up...or does he lose heart? I want to change the ending... He does not die but "rethinks and reframes" and becomes CEO of the Railroad :)

  1. Anna, I got such a kick out of hearing that story! As a former 1st grade teacher, I remember talking about John Henry and even remember a song we used to sing about him. You brought back some great memories for me!

  2. A lovely thought. And Beth, as a former first grade teacher myself I have those same fond memories. I even have a recording of the song by Harry Belafonte.

  4. I remember listening to that story when my teacher read it to us. There is also a good Disney rendition. I cried when I heard the story...I just didn't want John Henry to die. I don't think he gave up, and I like your ending better Anna.
